Beng Mealea was built in middle of the 12th century, with later additions in the reing of the SuryavarmanII with the style of Agnkor Wat and dedicated to Hinduism.40 km due east from Angkor Wat. Take the road to Banteay Srie, but at the fork 2 km before Banteay Srei (31 km from the Grand Hotel, Siem Reap and 17.5 km from the village.

B eng Mealea, as we call it today, remains shrouded in mystery. Despite its large size, it's not mentioned in any of the Khmer Empire's inscriptions. Therefore, we don't know when it was built, or by whom. The temple has been left unrestored, with parts of it having merged with the jungle.

It takes around an hour and a half to drive the 60 or so kilometres to Beng Mealea temple from Siem Reap. Due to its location outside of the town, it isn't as busy as the temples at Angkor. However, it does still attract hundreds of visitors each day. Beng Mealea is often cited as a favourite temple for visitors because of its unique appearance.

In the centre of the reservoir is a recently restored shrine or mebon temple by the name of Prasat Veal Phty while Prasat Chrei (Beng Mealea) lies 150m south of the southern embankment.
